Juxtaposition

"Juxtaposition is the placement of two things (usually abstract concepts, though it can refer to physical objects) near each other."
As defined by Wikipedia

Juxtaposition also means a method of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast. It is use for comparing or contrasting between two things usually. This method is popular use in a lot of presentation because it is a creative process made to channel idea or meaning to people. In class, our lecturer, Mr. Mustafa tries to explain to us about what is the meaning of juxtaposition by asking us a question. The question is about the wall in the lecture room. He asked, what the difference you can see between the wall? Why is it one of the wall orange color and the other one is yellow color? What is the wall try to communicate with us? So, many students come with their own opinion, and the lecturer tries to conclude it. In order to understand it easily, the lecturer tells us that juxtaposition is just about communicating idea with us.

Thank you. :D

Creative Studies Class - Week 6 !

For this week class, I think it was an interesting class for me than previous class. Because in class we are doing an interesting activity, that is making a mind map. I know usually people will say doing mind map is a boring activity, but this time, at this class, the lecturer make it more fun. The mind map is about mortar and pestle.

We have to draw it on a piece of paper, then the lecturer brief us on the situation on what to write for the paper. The situation is like this, "If an alien find this mortar & pestle, what will they use it at their place?". Is it interesting? Yes, definitely it an interactive activity because everyone in the class need to find the usage of it as an alien. Then it is time for us to tell and share what it is use for. Some said that it is use for combat, the pestle as the weapon and the mortar as the shield. My idea is that it act as a transport. The mortar as the carrier and the pestle as the the handle. For me, I like this kind of activity, because it generates my mind and become more active.

Next, the lecturer shows us some picture for us to interpret what kind of juxtaposition have in it. We have to relate the picture with the world, what it tries to communicate with us. As for an example, the lecturer show us a HSBC's picture. The picture have a crocodile and a bird and it is about risk in bank if I am not mistaken. For me, for the first time I tried to interpret it, I think the crocodile as the bank and the bird as the customer. So, the risk we can see that the customer have to be more careful if making an investment with the band. That is just my opinion.

Thank you. :D

Creative Studies Class - Week 5 !

This is what I got from the class :

Creative Studies is about Brain.
L + R = New Ideas
*L=Left brain, R=Right brain*

Here it means that we have to use both of our main power that is brain, to create a new idea. So, use it wisely, if we use it in a good way, it will produce a good product and vise versa.

Thinking
  • Thinking as a skill
  • It can be improved
  • How? By training

Ready to change !
  • Lateral thinking
  • "Mind Mapping"
  • New Ideas

Beware Intelligence Trap
  • to prove someone else wrong

Logical Mind Map
  • is directly connected to stereotype
  • people knows what they are/is a fact
  • everything is stereotypes

Associated Mind Map
  • able to generate random words
  • new ideas
  • people easily to remember the word/term

Creative Studies Class - Week 4 !

Class on week 4, the things that I learned in the class is about Juxtaposition.
The lecturer gave his lecture about it and show some videos about Juxtaposition.
This is notes that I've jot down from the class that I want share..

Juxtaposition
  • can be defined as placing two variables between contrast or similarity
  • many creative process rely on juxtaposition
  • juxtaposition is communicating you and the other object (ex : screen. projector, etc..)
  • human brain will automatically associate and transfer meaning
  • when two things placed side by side, your brain try to figure what is the relationship between two things
  • many creative process relies on juxtaposition
That's all what I've jot down from the class. Maybe I am not fully understand on this topic, but I will try to make an own study, by searching in the internet for me to understand more.

Thank You! :D

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

Novelty
Wikipedia define that the quality of being new, although it may be said to have an objective dimension (such as abstract art or impression) it essentially exist in the subjective perception of individual.

In my opinion, novelty means something new or unusual and it is important for everybody in the world. The study of creativity that is based on the presumption of novelty aims to explain how original works are produced by using the old material and to reveal the universal laws of its generation.

Creativity
It refers to the phenomenon whereby a person creates something new (a product, a solution, a work of art etc.) that has some kind of value. What counts as "new" may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within which the novelty occurs. What counts as "valuable" is similarly defined in a variety of ways.

In my words, as I stated in my previous post, creativity is refer to many things such as creative work, creative design, creative drawing and etc. Creative is something that been created by someone, his/her idea that make it looks unique and creative. As an example, someone create a design/logo/typography, using his/her idea, and make it looks nice, that is what make him/her creative.

Innovation
A new discipline of innovation born from the understanding and application of methods from several different areas, such as, design, business and social sciences. In my opinion, changing the existing ideas or knowledge for the purpose of improvement is the meaning of Innovation. Knowledge and attitudes that have direct impact on building innovation competencies are some of the conditions.

Invention
It means "the act of finding out or inventing; contrivance or construction of that which has not before existed; as the invention of logarithms, the invention of the art of printing.

I think invention can be defined as creating new ideas using little knowledge which only created or invent by the inventor. There are still some different between invention and innovation. As conclusion, innovation is the extension of invention or the process of improvement where begin.

Creative Studies Class - Week 3 !

Hye!
For this week class, what I've learnt?
Okay, let me share it with you.
This is based on my notes that I've jot down.

At the beginning of the class, the lecturer was talking about "Listening Power". He said that human only can focus in the class just for 10 minutes. I am not too surprised with the statement, because I think it is true, I am also lost during lecture time. He is also said the 10 minutes that human can focus, only 25% from the lecture that human can get and other 75% is lost. But I think we can change it, human can't show they are weak, it is them that are controlling their own body and brain, so 25% that expected from the research, can be increased more, I believe that human can do it.

Don't be like this!

This is from the lecture slides, it is about "Ambiguity of Creativity" :-
  • is seeing the same thing, but thinking of something different
  • creative simply cannot be defined
  • called creative if it make sense and adaptable by the community
  • something original that has value
After the lecturer finished his slide, he shows us some videos. The videos are about the baby incubator and the newspaper designer. The videos are quite interesting. I was attracted with the baby incubator video because in this video, the people are creating sleeping bag for baby and it functions as the incubator. This is to help the baby that die because cannot get warm air after been delivered. I am not so sure how it functions, but that is what I understand.

These are some quotes that I interested from the lecturer's slides and videos :-

"The best way to predict your future
is to create it."

"Your job in this world
is solve problem."

"If not now, then when?
If not me, then who?"

Thank you ! :D

Creative Studies Class - Week 2 !

What I have learnt ?
What did I get ?
From this class.

For this week class, the lecturer, Mr. Yap Sau Bin, give an interesting lecture about defining creativity. From his lecture, I have jot down some notes for my future references and for this blog contents. So, these are my notes that I have taken from the class and I gladly to share it :

Defining Creativity :
  • general of new ideas or new ways of doing something
  • ability to think up and design new inventions
  • ability to see something in a new way
  • is an attitude :- ability to accept change and newness
Maybe I did not get all the definition of creativity, but the four definition that I manage to jot down from the class are already enough for me to understand about the term creativity. Hopefully I can practic the ways as mention at the definition above for me to be more creative.

As the part of the lecture, I have jot down some notes that I am not pretty sure whether I understand about it or not but I will try my best to understand it by searching it on Google.
The lecture is about...

"Why people are motivated to be creative :-
  • need for novel, varied and complex stimulation
  • need to communicate ideas and values
  • need to solve problems "

I was attracted with one quote from the video that my lecturer show it to the class. The quote is sound like this...

"if you not prepare to be wrong,
you can't be creative"

From the quote, I feel that is not bad to be wrong. Wrong is a mistake that we make. For me, mistake is the best teacher in life. So, make mistake, be wrong, if you want to be creative.
Thank you! :D
